Arion Fountain Travel Guide

Located on the Upper Square (Horní náměstí) in Olomouc, Czech Republic, the Arion Fountain is a captivating blend of modern art and ancient mythology. Created in 2002 during the square's reconstruction, it distinguishes itself as the only contemporary addition to Olomouc's collection of Baroque fountains. The fountain draws inspiration from the Greek legend of Arion, a poet and musician who, when thrown overboard a ship, was rescued by a dolphin enchanted by his song.The fountain features an oval pool adorned with several bronze sculptural groups. These include an obelisk atop a large turtle shell, a sculpture of two children, and a standing figure of Arion with his dolphin. A separate turtle sculpture sits beside the fountain, delighting children. The sculptures are covered in detailed reliefs celebrating Moravia, the city of Olomouc, and its people. Designed by Olomouc native Ivan Theimer and Angela Chiantelli, the fountain stands near the Town Hall, becoming a popular gathering spot where visitors admire its beauty and children play in its waters.The story of Arion resonated with the people of Olomouc, representing justice and rescue from destruction, particularly after the town's hardships during the Thirty Years' War.
