Stránská Rock: A Natural Monument

Stránská Rock (Stránská skála) is a prominent natural monument situated in Brno, specifically in the Brno-Slatina district. This remarkable location boasts a unique geological history, with settlements dating back to the Paleolithic era, including evidence of Homo erectus.The area's geological composition consists of Jurassic limestone, formed approximately 600,000 years ago. The northwestern slope features karstified limestone cliffs, caves, and fossiliferous fissures, making it a significant paleontological site. Excavations have revealed a wealth of fossils, including those of marine animals, birds, and the extinct sabre-toothed cat, Homotherium moravicum.Throughout history, Stránská Rock has served various purposes. Limestone from the site was used as a construction material in the Middle Ages. During World War II, tunnels were dug for a nearby aircraft engine factory, though the work was interrupted by an air raid. After the war, a fallout shelter was constructed, now serving as a civil defense command post.Today, Stránská Rock is a protected area and a popular destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
