Discover more about Starý zámek

Located approximately 300 meters from the newer Hořovice chateau, the Starý Zámek, or Old Castle, offers a glimpse into the historical layers of Hořovice. Originally built in the 13th century as a Gothic castle, it was later transformed into a Renaissance residence in the late 15th century. The castle is associated with Eliska Zhořelecká, the granddaughter of Charles IV, who was born here in 1390.Over the centuries, the castle faced damage from the Hussite wars, a fire in 1540, and plundering by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War. When the new Baroque chateau was constructed in the 18th century, the Starý Zámek transitioned to administrative functions. Today, it is a U-shaped building with a mansard roof and simple facades. The Starý Zámek is home to the Museum of the Hořovicko region, which showcases the area's history and crafts, including traditional production of hobnails and accordions. The Information Centre provides details on Hořovice and the surrounding area. The castle also hosts art exhibitions and cultural events.
