U Matky Boží: A Glimpse into Pilsen's Art Nouveau Soul

U Matky Boží, translating to 'At the Mother of God,' is a captivating building located in Pilsen's Vnitřní Město (Inner City) district. Constructed in 1907 by architect Ladislav Skřivánek and builder Josef Špalek for the Rozum family, it stands on the site of a former, older structure, the history of which dates back to the mid-16th century. The building's facade is adorned with vibrant sgraffito artwork in the Art Nouveau style. The detailed artwork features depictions of the Madonna, complete with a crown, the Czech lion, and the coat of arms of the City of Pilsen. Scenes of Hussite warriors also adorn the building, possibly illustrating the legend of the city's salvation during the Hussite siege. Inside, the building features beautifully crafted stucco, carpentry, and glasswork, showcasing the Art Nouveau style. U Matky Boží not only provides a glimpse into Pilsen's architectural heritage but also serves as a reminder of the city's rich cultural and spiritual identity.
