Discover more about Old Castle Stairs

The Old Castle Stairs (Staré zámecké schody) are a historic and scenic route connecting Prague's Lesser Town with the iconic Prague Castle. Originating in the 16th century, the stairs have been reconstructed over time, most notably between 1835 and 1837, resulting in the 121 stone steps seen today. These stairs weren't just built for convenience; they evolved from ancient paths used since the 9th century, offering access to the castle for residents and visitors alike. In the 17th century, the trails were formalized into stone steps, allowing easier access to the castle. The east side of the castle was primarily used by the villages at the base of the hill called Klarov and Pisek. A road was constructed between these villages and a fortified entry area in front of the Black Tower called a Barbican. As you ascend, you'll be treated to panoramic views of Prague's cityscape, including the charming Baroque architecture and red rooftops of Malá Strana. The stairs themselves are enclosed by walls, creating a safe and accessible passage. Along the way, you might encounter street performers and musicians, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. Near the top, a small cafe offers a place to rest and enjoy the views overlooking the Fürstenberg Gardens. The Old Castle Stairs provide a tangible connection to Prague's rich history. The name “Old Castle Stairs” has been officially used since 1829. They have inspired artists and songwriters, including Karel Hašler, who wrote a popular song about them. Climbing these steps is not just a physical journey but also a walk through time, offering a unique perspective on Prague's beauty and heritage.
