Pokličky: Nature's Stone Mushrooms

Pokličky, also known as the Mšeno or Jestřebice Pot-Lids, are captivating sandstone formations located near Mšeno in the Czech Republic. These remarkable geological features resemble giant mushrooms, a result of centuries of erosion acting upon the sandstone landscape of the Kokořínsko Protected Landscape Area. The 'lids' are formed because the upper layers of the sandstone contain more iron and are more resistant to weathering than the softer, clay-rich sandstone pillars beneath. This differential erosion has sculpted the rocks into their distinctive mushroom or pot-lid shapes, with some formations reaching heights of up to 12 meters. The largest 'hat' measures approximately 6 x 5 x 1.5 meters. Visitors can explore Pokličky via marked hiking trails, most notably the blue trail from Mšeno or the red trail from Kokořín Castle. A short, steep climb up wooden steps leads to breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The area is a paradise for photographers and hikers, offering a chance to witness the ongoing forces of nature shaping the landscape. While climbing on the formations is strictly prohibited to protect them, the views from the trails are well worth the visit. The surrounding Kokořínsko region is rich in natural beauty and historical sites. The nearby village of Hlučov features well-preserved traditional cottages, adding to the area's charm. A short walk from Pokličky leads to Restaurace Hlučov, offering local cuisine, while a 2 km walk will take you to Pobuda, a cozy restaurant near Kokořín Castle.
