Castle Kokorin: A Romantic Bohemian Fortress
Discover Castle Kokorin: A romantic medieval castle nestled in the Bohemian forest, offering history, stunning views, and a peaceful natural escape.
Nestled within the Kokořínsko Protected Landscape Area, Castle Kokorin presents a captivating blend of history and natural beauty. Founded in the early 14th century by Hynek Berka of Dubé, the castle experienced a tumultuous history, including damage during the Hussite Wars and a period of abandonment that led to its ruin. Emperor Ferdinand III even deemed it a 'cursed castle', forbidding its repair. Despite its decline, the castle's haunting beauty inspired artists and poets, leading to its revival in the late 19th century. Prague entrepreneur Václav Špaček purchased the ruins and, with support from the Czech Tourist Club, oversaw a Romantic neo-Gothic restoration between 1911 and 1918. Today, the castle stands as a testament to this revival, offering visitors guided tours of its interior, including the knight's hall and living rooms, as well as access to its tower for panoramic views. Visitors can explore the castle's grounds, wander along the ramparts, and climb the tower for stunning views of the surrounding forests and sandstone formations. The surrounding Kokořínsko region offers hiking trails, unique rock formations like the Pokličky (lids), and a peaceful escape into nature.
