Discover more about Vinok Sculpture (Ukraine Mothers)

Vinok, a striking wire sculpture by Czech artist Veronika Psotková, is suspended above Dlouhá Street in Prague's Old Town. Created in 2022, this powerful installation is more than just an artwork; it's a symbol of resilience, remembrance, and protest in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The sculpture takes its name from the traditional Ukrainian flower wreath (вінок), a symbol deeply rooted in Ukrainian culture, evolving from pagan rituals to a representation of national identity. The artist was inspired by images of Ukrainian women wearing these wreaths during the early days of the war. Unlike traditional statues, Vinok is ethereal, crafted from interconnected steel wires forming a delicate yet haunting silhouette. It honors Ukrainian women and mothers suffering under Russian aggression and stands as the artist's protest against the war. Curator Pavel Kubesa describes it as "inherently ambiguous – beautiful and terrifying simultaneously". As the tenth installation in NoD Gallery's series addressing social, political, or environmental issues, it serves as a gesture of solidarity with Ukraine. Floating above the street, it compels passersby to pause and reflect.
