Discover more about Náměstí Svobody

Náměstí Svobody, known as Freedom Square, has been the main square of Brno since the 13th century. Its unusual triangular shape was formed by the intersection of ancient trade routes. Throughout history, it has been called Dolní trh (Lower Market) and Velké náměstí (Big Square). The square is home to several architecturally significant buildings. These include the Renaissance Dům pánů z Lipé (House of the Lords of Lipá), Kleinův palác (Klein Palace), and Dům U Čtyř mamlasů (House of Four Giants). The functionalist facade of the Komerční banka and the modern Omega Palace also contribute to the square's diverse architectural landscape. Náměstí Svobody features several art installations. The Baroque plague column from 1689 commemorates plague outbreaks. Two bronze fountains feature verses by poet Jan Skácel. The controversial black granite astronomical clock drops a marble every day at 11:00 AM, referencing Brno's defense against the Swedish siege in 1645. A subtle line on the paving marks the foundation of the former Church of St. Nicholas. Today, Náměstí Svobody hosts numerous events, including Easter and Christmas markets, wine festivals, and concerts. It is a central meeting point and a place where the city's history and modern life converge.
