Discover more about Roklanská chata

Roklanská chata is located in the heart of the Modrava bogs in Šumava National Park. Built as a forestry lodge, its story is intertwined with the region's turbulent past. After 1948, the cabin found itself within the restricted zone of the Iron Curtain, effectively cutting it off from the outside world. For many years, it was the highest year-round inhabited building in Šumava.Ironically, early information suggested the lodge's construction was driven by growing tourism, prompting the Club of Czechoslovak Tourists to build accommodation next to the Roklanská forester´s lodge in 1936. However, more recent research has revealed that the lodge was built by the forest administration for its workers, and the Club of Czechoslovak Tourists never owned or managed it. During the communist regime, the area became a sensitive border zone, with a military outpost established near the cabin.Today, Roklanská chata lies within the first zone of Šumava National Park, a strictly protected area where public access is prohibited. The cabin's fate hangs in the balance, with its deteriorating condition sparking debate between those who advocate for its preservation as a historical landmark and conservationists who prioritize the protection of the surrounding Modrava bogs, one of Central Europe's most valuable natural sites.
