Discover more about Caesarova kašna

The Caesar Fountain, located on Horní náměstí (Upper Square) in Olomouc, stands as the city's most renowned and artistically sophisticated fountain. This Baroque monument, created in 1725, pays homage to Gaius Julius Caesar, the mythical founder of Olomouc. The fountain features a statue of Caesar on horseback, set upon an imitation rock formation in the center of the basin. At the horse's feet lie two male figures, personifying the Morava and Danube rivers. A seated dog completes the ensemble, symbolizing the city's loyalty to the emperor. Interestingly, Caesar's statue faces away from the Olomouc Town Hall, towards Michael's Hill, where a Roman army camp was supposedly located. Some believe Caesar is looking at the busts of soldiers on the roof of a building across the square. The fountain was designed by Jan Jiří Schauberger, who drew inspiration from Gian Lorenzo Bernini's equestrian statue of Constantine the Great in the Vatican. Václav Render, a master stonemason from Olomouc, crafted the fountain's basin. The Caesar Fountain is one of seven Baroque fountains in Olomouc, all contributing to the city's historical charm and attracting tourists.
