Discover more about Cikánská branka

Cikánská branka, also known as the Gypsy Gate or Gypsy Breach, is a lesser-known yet historically intriguing site nestled within the city of Olomouc. This small gate, or postern, is integrated into the ancient city walls and fortifications. It once served as a passage connecting the city with the area towards Klášterní Hradisko. The gate's name, shrouded in legend, is linked to an event that supposedly occurred in 1425. According to the tale, a group of Roma people sought refuge within the city walls, presenting a letter sealed by the Hungarian King. The city scribe recognized the seal, recalling similar people, called 'Gypsies,' he had seen in Vienna. While the gate is named after this event, it wasn't exclusively used by the Roma. Today, Cikánská branka is found within the Locatelli Bastion, an area known to locals as the Summer Cinema. The bastion itself is a significant historical monument, completed in 1676, and the best-preserved part of the original bastion fortress. The gate provides access from the park beneath the Olomouc Cathedral to the Summer Cinema. The gate was reopened in April 2019, after years of being inaccessible.
