    Discover more about Hradisko Monastery

Nestled in the suburbs of Olomouc, the Hradisko Monastery, also known as Klášter Hradisko, boasts a rich history dating back to 1078 when it was established as a Benedictine monastery. In the mid-12th century, it transitioned to a Premonstratensian monastery, becoming a prominent religious center in Moravia. The monastery's grounds have witnessed numerous historical events, including destruction during the Mongol invasion in 1241 and the Hussite Wars in 1429. The present-day buildings, constructed between 1661 and 1737, showcase Italian Mannerism and High Baroque architectural styles. Designed by Giovanni Pietro Tencalla and Domenico Martinelli, the complex features a square layout with four wings, corner towers, and a moat. Inside, visitors can marvel at the stunning frescoes, ornate altars, and historical artifacts. The prelature's ceremonial hall features a ceiling fresco by Paul Troger and illusionistic architecture by Antonio Tassi. The library's vaults display exquisite painting and stucco decorations by Innocenzo Monti and Baltassare Fontana. In 1784, Emperor Joseph II dissolved the monastery, and since 1802, it has served as a military hospital, the oldest in the Czech Republic. Despite its current function, the monastery retains its historical and architectural significance, offering guided tours of its Baroque interiors and gardens on specific days. The complex is often called the Haná Escorial because of its floor layout.
