Discover more about Jupiter Fountain

The Jupiter Fountain is a prominent landmark in Olomouc's Dolní náměstí, embodying the city's rich history and artistic heritage. This Baroque fountain is one of six that contribute to Olomouc's unique urban landscape, showcasing a blend of mythology and artistry. Originally, a statue of St. Florian, the protector against fires, stood on this site since 1707. However, in 1735, as interest in classical antiquity grew, the statue was replaced with that of Jupiter, the Roman god of the sky and thunder. This transformation aligned with the antique Baroque program of sculptural decoration of Olomouc's fountains. The new sculpture was designed by Filip Sattler. The fountain features Jupiter holding a lightning bolt in his raised hand, symbolizing his power. An eagle with spread wings stands at his feet, further emphasizing his authority. The pedestal, adorned with mascarons, is the only remaining element from the original sculpture by Wacław Render. The fountain serves not only as a visual spectacle but also as a reminder of Olomouc's historical and cultural evolution.
