History of Svatý Kopeček

The Hill Before the Pilgrimage

Svatý Kopeček occupies a wooded elevation east of Olomouc, within a landscape shaped by farming, forest management and the development of settlements around the Moravian city. The hill became associated with religious devotion in the seventeenth century, when the merchant Jan Andrýsek sponsored a chapel dedicated to the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. The foundation reflected the wider Catholic revival of the Habsburg lands after the upheavals of the early modern period, and it established the site as a local place of pilgrimage rather than simply a rural hill.

The Baroque Basilica

A larger church was developed on the hill in the later seventeenth century, with the Premonstratensians of Hradisko Monastery playing an important role in its religious administration. The building evolved into the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, whose architecture and decoration express the theatrical confidence of Moravian Baroque. Its elevated setting helped turn the church into a visual landmark for the surrounding countryside, while annual pilgrimages connected Svatý Kopeček with Olomouc and neighbouring communities.

Pilgrimage and Changing Rule

The basilica continued to draw pilgrims during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, although its fortunes were affected by changes in church administration and the political history of the Habsburg and later Czechoslovak lands. The nearby Hradisko monastery itself underwent major institutional changes, and religious life across the region was reshaped by modernisation and periods of state pressure. Svatý Kopeček nevertheless retained its devotional significance, supported by its prominent church, processional traditions and relationship with the surrounding settlements.

A Religious and Recreational Destination

During the twentieth century, Svatý Kopeček developed a wider visitor identity alongside its pilgrimage role. Olomouc Zoo opened on the hill in 1956, introducing a major recreational attraction within the wooded landscape and drawing families as well as religious visitors. The basilica was recognised as a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1995, reaffirming its importance in Czech Catholic heritage. Today the hill combines active worship, protected cultural memory, zoological recreation and access to the countryside east of Olomouc.
