Discover more about Jihlava's underground

Delve into the depths of Jihlava with a visit to its extensive underground network, the second largest in the Czech Republic, stretching over 25 kilometers. Originally created by connecting medieval cellars, these tunnels, dug as deep as 14 meters, served various purposes, from storing goods and providing shelter during wars to acting as a drainage system. As you explore the labyrinth, you'll discover the unique greenish glowing walls in one of the corridors, a phenomenon discovered in 1978 that remains a mystery. The underground also features exhibits dedicated to medieval mining, showcasing mining landscapes, ore processing techniques, and Jihlava's mining law. You can also view ceramic finds from the 15th century and minerals discovered in the Vysočina Region. Choose from several tour options, including the Historical Underground circuit, the Collectors circuit (exploring the sewer system), and the Alpha Civil Defense Cover, a preserved Cold War-era shelter. Each tour offers a different perspective on the underground's history and significance. Appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes are recommended due to the cool temperatures and uneven terrain.
