Klokočovská lípa is an awe-inspiring natural monument nestled in the village of Klokočov-Chotěboř. This ancient linden tree, estimated to be around 1,000 years old, stands as a beacon of heritage and natural beauty. Towering over the landscape, its thick canopy offers shade and tranquility to visitors. The tree's significance extends beyond its age and size; it is deeply intertwined with local legends and traditions. It's believed to have served as a landmark along the medieval Libická trade route. Legend says that Charles IV, the Holy Roman Emperor, rested under its shade in 1370 while traveling from Lichnice Castle to a healing spring, giving rise to its alternate names: Royal or Charles' Linden. Another legend suggests that Jan Žižka, a Hussite military leader, also rested under the tree. The tree's trunk, with a circumference of nearly 9 meters, is now hollow and marked by time. To prevent it from splitting under the weight of its branches, iron hoops have supported it since 1923. Despite damage over the years, the tree has shown resilience, forming aerial roots within its cavity. In 1995, conservation efforts addressed the trunk's cavity, secured steel bands, and added shingle and laminate roofing to protect the openings. A fence was also erected to protect the root system. The Klokočovská lípa has been a protected landmark since 1976 and is listed among the country's notable trees. Visitors can immerse themselves in the tranquil atmosphere, stroll around the area, and admire the views of the countryside. Benches, tables, and information boards are available near the tree.
