Discover more about Franciscan monastery

Nestled near Plzeň's Main Square, the Franciscan Monastery (Františkánský klášter) is a captivating historical site with origins stretching back to the city's founding in 1295 by King Wenceslaus II. Originally a Minorite monastery, the complex evolved into Franciscan hands and stands as one of Plzeň's oldest buildings, remarkably preserving its early Gothic form despite enduring numerous historical upheavals. The monastery's Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary showcases Gothic cross-vaulted ceilings and pointed arches, divided into a main nave and two side naves by rounded pillars. Over the centuries, the monastery saw periods of damage and restoration, including remodeling in the Baroque style during the 17th and 18th centuries. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity was added in 1611, and St. Antonin's Chapel later in the 17th century, enriching the complex's architectural tapestry. The cloisters retain their original Gothic form, featuring a Renaissance stone pulpit from 1543. The Chapel of St. Barbora, dating back to 1370-1380, boasts a stellar vaulted ceiling supported by a central column. Today, the monastery houses the Museum of Religious Art of the Plzeň Diocese, offering visitors a chance to explore religious artifacts and learn about the region's spiritual heritage.
