Podkovák Nature Reserve, a hidden gem in the western part of the Plzeň Region of the Czech Republic, protects a unique raised bog forest. Situated within the Český les Protected Landscape Area, this 5.63-hectare reserve offers visitors a chance to explore a delicate and fascinating ecosystem. The reserve's main feature is a small raised bog forest nestled in a depression, characterized by the presence of Pinus uncinata ssp. rotundata, a unique type of pine. This environment fosters a variety of rare plants adapted to the wet, acidic soil conditions. Keep an eye out for the black crowberry (Empetrum nigrum) and cranberry (Oxycoccus palustris), which thrive in this habitat. Podkovák is also home to diverse wildlife, including the elusive wood grouse. While amphibians and reptiles are less common, you might spot a frog, newt, lizard or toad. The reserve also provides a habitat for rare species of spiders and beetles. A road passes through the reserve, offering easy access to its most interesting features. However, venturing off the designated path is prohibited to protect the fragile environment. A boardwalk trail makes the reserve accessible to visitors of all abilities, including wheelchair users.
