Discover more about Victims of evil monument

The Victims of Evil Monument, also known as the Meditation Garden, is a poignant and unique memorial in Plzeň, Czech Republic. It serves as a tribute to the countless individuals who suffered under oppressive regimes, especially during the Nazi occupation and the subsequent Communist era. The garden was founded by Luboš Hruška, a political prisoner who, after enduring imprisonment, dedicated his life to creating a space for remembrance and reconciliation. After being released from prison in 1960, Hruška began transforming his family's orchard into a meditation park. He carefully landscaped the grounds, incorporating rare coniferous trees, vibrant flowers, and quiet corners designed to encourage introspection. In 1987-1991, sculptor Roman Podrázský created twelve unique sandstone sculptures for the Stations of the Cross, installed throughout the garden. The garden also features a chapel consecrated to St. Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish priest who sacrificed his life in Auschwitz. The garden officially opened to the public after the Velvet Revolution in 1990. In 1995, Hruška donated the garden to the Bishopric of Plzeň, ensuring its preservation and accessibility for future generations. Today, the Victims of Evil Monument stands as a testament to the resilience of the Czech people and a place for quiet contemplation amidst the beauty of nature.
