Higbee Beach: A Natural Haven in Cape May

Higbee Beach, a hidden gem in Cape May, New Jersey, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The inn, later known as The Hermitage, operated as a lodging place for Delaware Bay pilots. In the early 20th century, part of Higbee Beach was used as a proving ground for munitions testing during World War I. Today, Higbee Beach is managed by the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, with the aim of preserving its natural habitats and protecting endangered wildlife. Visitors can explore the area's nature trails, which feature viewing platforms for birdwatching and scenic views of the fields and forests. The beach is also known for its 'Cape May diamonds,' tumbled quartz stones that wash ashore. While Higbee Beach was once known for being a nude beach, nudity is now prohibited.
