Discover more about World War II Lookout Tower

Standing tall on Sunset Boulevard in Cape May, New Jersey, the World War II Lookout Tower, also known as Fire Control Tower No. 23, is a poignant reminder of the area's strategic importance during World War II. This tower was part of the extensive Fort Miles defense system, which included a network of fire control towers and gun batteries designed to protect the Delaware Bay from enemy vessels. Built in a remarkable two and a half days in June 1942, the 71-foot-tall tower is constructed of reinforced concrete. Soldiers stationed here scanned the ocean and bay for German warships and submarines, relaying information to Battery 223, a nearby coastal artillery battery. Although Battery 223 never fired upon an enemy, the tower played a vital role in the defense of the Delaware Bay. Today, the tower has been restored by Cape May MAC (Museums+Arts+Culture) and serves as a museum. Visitors can climb to the sixth-floor spotting gallery, where interpreters share stories of Cape May's role in the war. Exhibits throughout the tower showcase photographs, artifacts, and information about the tower's history and the experiences of local veterans. The All Veterans Memorial, featuring an eternal flame, stands at the rear of the tower, providing a space for quiet contemplation. From the top, enjoy panoramic views of Cape May Point, Sunset Beach, and the surrounding coastline.
