Towers Beach: A WWII Sentinel

Towers Beach, situated within Delaware Seashore State Park, is more than just a scenic stretch of sand; it's a place where history and recreation intertwine. The beach is named for the cylindrical concrete observation towers built during World War II, which served as vital lookouts for Nazi ships and submarines. These towers, part of a coastal defense system, stand as silent sentinels of a bygone era. Today, Towers Beach offers visitors a chance to explore these historical landmarks while enjoying the sun and surf. One of the towers, Tower #3, is located within the park near the beach and is undergoing restoration with the help of the Delaware Seashore Preservation Foundation and the Fort Miles Historical Association. While only one tower at Cape Henlopen State Park is currently open to the public, the ongoing efforts promise future opportunities to explore more of these structures. Climbing the renovated tower at Cape Henlopen offers spectacular coastal views, stretching up to 14.5 miles on a clear day. Towers Beach itself provides a classic beach experience with amenities such as lifeguards during the summer, a bathhouse with showers, and accessible beach access with a wooden boardwalk ramp and beach wheelchairs. The beach is also known for being less crowded than the main beach in Cape Henlopen State Park. The area is ADA-accessible, ensuring everyone can enjoy the natural beauty and historical significance of Towers Beach.
