Fort Stark State Historic Site: Coastal Defense and History

Fort Stark State Historic Site, located on Jerry's Point in New Castle, New Hampshire, is a captivating blend of military history and natural beauty. This 10-acre site, overlooking the Piscataqua River, Little Harbor, and the Atlantic Ocean, was strategically important for defending Portsmouth Harbor and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Named in honor of John Stark, a New Hampshire officer who commanded forces at the Battle of Bennington in 1777, the fort's history spans several eras of coastal defense. Originally established in 1746, Fort Stark was active through World War II. The site features remnants of fortifications from the 19th and 20th centuries, including gun batteries and the Harbor Entrance Control Post (HECP), which was cleverly disguised as a seaside mansion during WWII. Visitors can explore the grounds, walk the trails, and imagine the fort's role in defending the coastline. Today, Fort Stark State Historic Site offers more than just a historical experience. Visitors can enjoy stunning ocean views, picnic on the grounds, fish from the breakwater, or launch a kayak from the small beach. The site also features a visitor center with military artifacts and exhibits about shipwrecks along the New Castle coast.
