The Allen McLane House, located in Smyrna, Delaware, is a tangible link to the American Revolution and the life of Colonel Allen McLane. Born in Philadelphia in 1746, McLane moved to Delaware and became a commissioned officer in the state militia in 1775. He played a vital role in many major engagements, including Long Island, White Plains, Trenton, Princeton, and the siege of Yorktown. His bravery and enterprise led to his captain's commission from General Washington in 1777.After the war, McLane settled in Smyrna and held several public offices, including Speaker of the state House of Representatives, member of the Privy Council, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, and U.S. Marshall for Delaware. He was also a delegate to Delaware's historic Constitution Ratification Convention in 1787 and a long-time advocate of the Methodist Church. McLane maintained homes in Smyrna until he moved to Wilmington after being appointed Port Collector in 1797.The house itself reflects the architectural style of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. While the interior may not always be open for tours, the exterior provides ample opportunity for exploration and photography. The surrounding gardens and landscape offer a peaceful retreat.
