Historically, the land was once a farm owned by the Higbee family in the 19th century. Joseph S. Higbee, a Delaware River pilot, purchased the land in 1823 and operated a hotel called The Hermitage, which served as lodging for pilots. The beach also played a role in early industry, serving as a proving ground for munitions testing during World War I. Today, Higbee Beach is renowned as a prime location for birdwatching, particularly during the spring and fall migrations. Its location on the Cape May Peninsula makes it a crucial stopover point for millions of birds traveling along the Atlantic Flyway. Birdwatchers can spot a variety of species, including warblers, blue grosbeaks, and yellow-breasted chats.
