Getting There

  • Driving

    White Clay Creek State Park has multiple entrances. For the Carpenter Recreation Area, a popular starting point, take Route 896 northwest of Newark. Parking is available in designated lots. From March 1 to November 30, a day-use entrance fee is charged: $4 for Delaware registered vehicles and $8 for out-of-state vehicles. The fee is valid for all Delaware State Parks on the same day.

  • Public Transport

    While public transportation options directly to White Clay Creek State Park are limited, you can take a DART bus to Newark and then use a ride-sharing service or taxi to reach the park. From the Newark Transit Center, a taxi or ride-share to the Carpenter Recreation Area entrance will cost approximately $15-$25. Check DART's website for the most up-to-date bus schedules and routes.

  • Walking

    If you are in the vicinity of Newark, consider walking or biking to the park via the Pomeroy Trail. This paved, accessible trail connects to White Clay Creek State Park from Hopkins Road. From downtown Newark, follow the James F. Hall Trail west to its intersection with the Pomeroy Trail, then head north into the park. There are no additional costs for accessing the park via the Pomeroy Trail.

White Clay Creek State Park is a haven of natural beauty and recreational opportunities in northern Delaware. Encompassing over 3,600 acres near Newark, the park's diverse landscape includes woodlands, meadows, and the sparkling White Clay Creek, a designated National Wild and Scenic River.The park's history is intertwined with the area's early farmers and millers, as well as the Du Pont family. Initially established in 1968 as a small recreational area, the park grew through land acquisitions and donations, becoming Walter S. Carpenter State Park in 1975. In 1995, it was renamed White Clay Creek State Park. The park's expansion continued with the purchase of the Judge Hugh M. Morris Estate in 1998 and the addition of the Rocky Hill estate in 2024.Today, White Clay Creek State Park offers over 37 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and running. These trails wind through varied terrain, from gentle paved paths to challenging mountain bike routes. Popular activities include fishing in the stocked White Clay Creek, disc golf, and exploring the Chambers House Nature Center. The park also preserves historic structures, including remnants of the Mason-Dixon Line.Visitors can enjoy a range of outdoor pursuits, from picnicking and birdwatching to sledding and cross-country skiing in the winter. The Carpenter Recreation Area provides picnic pavilions, a playground, and a bandshell for summer concerts.
