BioDesign Studio: Where Biology Meets Innovation

BioDesign Studio, situated inside The Tech Interactive in downtown San Jose, provides a fascinating look into the growing fields of synthetic biology, bioengineering, and biological design. This unique exhibit space aims to demystify complex scientific concepts, empowering visitors to explore and create with the fundamentals of life. Upon entering, guests are immersed in a world where biology is not just a subject, but a technology to be explored. The studio is divided into interactive stations, each offering a different perspective on biological systems. Highlights include the BioTinkering Lab, the first community biotinkering space within a museum, where visitors can participate in hands-on activities like creating mushroom bricks from recycled materials. Another popular station is the Living Colors Lab, where projection mapping guides visitors through a real-world lab experiment, mixing DNA into bacteria to create glowing colors, visualized in real-time on a wall of LED petri dishes. The Creature Creation Station offers a digital twist, allowing visitors to build virtual lifeforms by snapping together physicalized pieces of DNA. These virtual creatures are then released into a digital world to interact with other beings. The BioDesign Studio aims to inspire and equip future problem-solvers with a biological toolkit and mindset.
