The Old State House: Delaware's Historic Capital

The Old State House, situated on The Green in Dover, Delaware, is a significant historical landmark. Completed in 1791, it served as Delaware's capitol during the United States' formative years. The building's Georgian architecture reflects the ideals of the time, and its rooms have been meticulously restored to showcase their original grandeur. Originally, the building housed both state and Kent County governments. The first floor features an 18th-century-style courtroom, while the second floor holds the former chambers of the state legislature. Notable portraits, including those of Commodores Jacob Jones and Thomas Macdonough by Thomas Sully, and George Washington by Denis A. Volozan, adorn the chambers. Throughout its history, the Old State House witnessed pivotal moments, including Delaware's ratification of the U.S. Constitution, making it the First State. The building also functioned as the Kent County Courthouse from 1792 to 1873. Although modifications were made over the years, including a Victorian-style remodeling in 1874, the building was restored to its original colonial appearance. Today, the Old State House is part of the First State Heritage Park and serves as a museum, offering guided tours and exhibits that detail Delaware's political landscape.
