Discover more about The Schwartz Center for the Arts

The Schwartz Center for the Arts stands as a testament to Dover's rich cultural history and commitment to the arts. The building's story began in 1904 when it opened as the Dover Opera House, a venue for live theater productions and touring vaudeville shows. In 1922, George Schwartz purchased the building, renaming it the Capitol Theater and expanding its offerings to include motion pictures. The Schwartz family played a significant role in the theater's history, with George's wife and daughter taking over after his death and even staging a protest against censorship in the 1970s. After closing in 1982, the theater sat vacant for many years before a group of local leaders formed the Friends of the Capitol Theater with the goal of restoring and reopening the venue. Following extensive renovations, the Schwartz Center for the Arts reopened in 2001, revitalizing downtown Dover and providing a state-of-the-art space for performing arts. Delaware State University took over complete ownership of the Schwartz Center after acquiring Wesley College. Today, the Schwartz Center hosts a wide variety of events, including performances by Delaware State University students, community theater productions, and touring artists. The center's diverse programming ensures that there is something for everyone to enjoy, from classical music and dance to contemporary theater and film. The Schwartz Center is not only a venue for entertainment but also a valuable educational resource, providing opportunities for students and community members to engage with the arts.
