Høkeren is housed within an authentically restored 18th-century building that has been meticulously preserved to maintain its historical character. The shop is furnished as a general store from around 1900, complete with original fixtures and period-appropriate merchandise arranged from floor to ceiling. Every corner reveals carefully curated items that transport visitors to the early decades of the 20th century, when such mixed general stores served as the commercial and social heart of Danish towns.

The Origins and Vision Behind the Project

The concept for Høkeren emerged in 1983 as part of Kerteminde Handelsforening's centennial celebration. A collaborative effort between the Trade Association, Kerteminde Museum, the municipal school, and the local municipality brought the vision to life. The original stall was furnished with authentic furniture and goods salvaged from numerous shops that had closed during that era. Students from the municipal school initially managed the operation, and the project has since been fully transferred to Kerteminde Museums, ensuring its preservation and professional stewardship.

The shop's inventory spans an eclectic range of items that reflect the practical and recreational needs of early-20th-century Danish households. Visitors encounter vintage toys, household implements, traditional wares, and curiosities that tell stories of daily life in a different era.
