Elia – Denmark’s Epic, Fiery Dome of Art and Sky

Elia is Herning’s colossal public artwork: a walk-on steel dome with panoramic views, erupting flame displays, and immersive encounters with Nordic industrial art.

4.3

Elia is a monumental, walkable sculpture and public artwork on the outskirts of Herning. Created by Ingvar Cronhammar, it serves as both a striking landmark and an immersive experience. Visitors can ascend its broad steps to see panoramic views, and, with luck, witness the awe-inspiring flame that periodically erupts from the center—a fusion of art, environment, and engineering.

  • Bring a camera—sunset and twilight provide especially dramatic lighting for photos of the sculpture and surrounding landscape.

Getting There

  • Walking

Elia is located in the Birk Centerpark district, around 4–5 km east of Herning’s city center. It’s a pleasant 40–50 minute walk through landscaped business parks, passing academic buildings and art installations. The domed structure becomes visible as you draw closer, standing out against the skyline. Pathways are mostly well-marked and level, but check weather conditions if planning to walk during winter.

Local buses regularly link Herning’s central station with stops in the Birk Centerpark area, with typical journey times of about 12–18 minutes. A single adult ticket costs around DKK 22–24. From the Birk Centerpark bus stop, Elia’s dome is immediately visible and only a brief stroll away along pedestrian pathways.

  • Taxi

Taxis from central Herning reach Elia in just 8–15 minutes, depending on traffic. Fares generally range from DKK 110–140 one way. Taxis can drop visitors directly at the Birk Centerpark access point. This is the most convenient option in poor weather or for those with limited mobility.

Discover more about Sdr. Anlæg

Elia towers over the grassy landscape in Herning’s Birk district, its vast domed form and towering steel columns immediately drawing the eye. Conceived and built by Swedish-Danish artist Ingvar Cronhammar between 1995 and 2001, Elia is much more than just Denmark’s largest sculpture. Standing 32 meters in diameter, the dome is encircled by four immense black chimneys and a network of steps, blending architectural ambition with industrial spectacle. Visitors are invited to ascend onto the sculpture via wide staircases, literally stepping onto art you can walk across. Once atop the dome, you’ll appreciate sweeping views—on clear days the wind ripples across the open grasslands and the nearby Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelt Museum is within sight. The setting, at the heart of the Birk Centerpark educational and cultural enclave, further deepens the sense that you’ve wandered into Denmark’s contemporary arts epicenter. But Elia’s most talked-about feature is its erupting flame. Every few hours, a pulse of fire, reaching up to eight meters, bursts from the center (timing is random and designed for surprise, operating only in good weather). This pyrotechnic heart embodies Cronhammar’s vision of unpredictable energy, creating a spectacle that’s both mysterious and primal. A stroll around the sculpture reveals striking perspectives from every angle—the austere black steel is photogenic against Nordic skies, and the structure invites contemplation on the relationship between man, technology, and nature. You’ll find no fences, no barriers; Elia is freely accessible at all hours, fostering a democratic, hands-on experience of massive-scale public art. Best of all, visiting is entirely free, so you can linger, picnic, and take in the shifting light and occasional flame at your own pace.
