Local tips

  • Wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots with good grip; most of the 5–6 km route is on loose, often slippery pebbles rather than firm sand.
  • Check tide information before setting out, as high water can partially flood lower sections of the spit and make the return more demanding.
  • Bring drinking water, sun protection and windproof layers—there is no shade or shelter along the reef, and conditions can change quickly.
  • Pack binoculars if you enjoy wildlife watching; the area is known for seabirds and the chance of spotting seals near the outer end.
  • Carry out all rubbish and tread carefully around vegetation and resting birds to help protect this fragile coastal environment.

Getting There

  • Car from Nordby or Tranebjerg

From the main villages on Samsø, driving to the Besser Rev trailhead typically takes 15–25 minutes, following local roads through farmland to the eastern side of the island. There is free roadside and small-area parking near the start of the walk, but spaces are limited in high season and surfaces can be unpaved. No parking fees or permits are normally required.

  • Bicycle on local roads

Cycling to Besser Rev is a popular option on Samsø’s quiet roads, with a typical riding time of 30–45 minutes from Tranebjerg and around 45–60 minutes from Nordby, depending on fitness and wind. The terrain is gently rolling rather than steep, but strong headwinds can make the trip more demanding. Using front and rear lights and reflective gear is advisable outside bright daylight; access to the reef itself is on foot only.

  • Taxi transfer on Samsø

Local taxis operate on Samsø and can provide direct transfers to and from the Besser Rev area. Travel time from the ferry harbour is usually 20–30 minutes, with fares commonly in the range of 200–350 DKK each way depending on distance and time of day. It is wise to book in advance, especially outside summer, and to arrange a pickup time as there are no taxi ranks at the trailhead.

A narrow road between two seas

Besser Rev is one of Samsø’s most distinctive natural features: a long, slender spit of shingle and sand that reaches several kilometres out into the water from the island’s east coast. On one side you look into the sheltered waters of Stauns Fjord; on the other, the open Kattegat rolls in with a different mood and colour. Standing here, you are never far from the sound of waves, with the horizon drawing a perfect line around you. What makes the experience special is the sense of exposure. The landscape is wide open, treeless and low, so the sky feels enormous. Light changes constantly as clouds pass overhead, reflected in the water on both sides. On clear days you can make out nearby islets and the outline of the mainland, while in softer weather the spit dissolves into haze and sea spray.

Shaped by tide, stones and steady winds

Geologically, Besser Rev is a classic Danish spit formation, built up over time as currents and tides have pushed sand, gravel and rounded stones into a long, curved arm. When the tide washes over the low-lying sections, it rearranges the shingle, leaving behind fresh patterns of pebbles and seaweed. The surface underfoot can be uneven and often slippery, with loosely packed rolled stones that shift as you walk. This restless edge between land and sea creates a dynamic environment. Storms can nibble away at parts of the spit and deposit new material elsewhere, subtly changing its outline from year to year. The lack of shelter means strong winds are common, from salt-laden gales to gentle breezes that rustle only the beach grasses clinging to the higher ridges.

Wildlife haven at the mouth of Stauns Fjord

The reef guards the entrance to Stauns Fjord, forming a shallow, nutrient-rich lagoon behind it. This protected water is an important resting and feeding area for birds, especially during migration seasons. Waders and seabirds forage along the waterline, while flocks may settle on the flats at low tide. At a respectful distance you can quietly watch their busy routines of probing, preening and lifting into the air. The outer end of the spit is also a good place to scan for seals. They sometimes surface with curious snouts in the deeper channels or haul out on distant sandbanks. Plant life is hardy and low to the ground: salt-tolerant grasses, beach peas, sea kale and other specialists that can cope with wind, salt spray and shifting stones, adding soft greens, greys and muted purples to the otherwise stony palette.

The walking experience along the shingle

Visiting Besser Rev is essentially a coastal hike. The classic route follows the spit out and back, roughly 5–6 km in total, mostly on pebbles rather than firm sand. This makes progress slower and more tiring than the distance suggests, and good footwear with solid grip is important. Walking poles can be helpful for those who are less steady on uneven surfaces. There is no shade along the spit, so sun, wind and weather are felt directly. On warm days, the heat reflects from the stones; on cooler ones, windproof layers quickly prove useful. Many people bring water, snacks or a packed picnic to enjoy on a comfortable patch of shingle, turning the outing into a half-day excursion with unhurried pauses to watch the water and passing boats in and out of Stauns Fjord.

Moments of stillness at the edge of the island

Despite its exposed location, Besser Rev invites quiet reflection. With only the sound of waves on stones and the calls of distant birds, it is easy to slow down and simply observe: the changing colour of the sea, foam swirling around beached driftwood, cloud shadows racing across the fjord. The spit’s gentle curve means views are constantly evolving as you walk, revealing new angles on Samsø’s low hills and the harbour at Langør. This is also a place where time feels stretched. The slow rhythm of your steps on the stones, the repetitive wash of water and the long horizon encourage you to linger. Whether you walk all the way to the tip or only part of the route, Besser Rev offers a strong sense of being at the very margin between land and sea, where weather and tide still set the agenda.

Respecting a fragile coastal landscape

Besser Rev is both resilient and delicate. While the stones underfoot seem robust, plant cover and birdlife can be vulnerable, especially during nesting and migration periods. Keeping to the obvious walking line, avoiding disturbance of resting birds and carrying out all litter helps preserve the character of this special coastal environment. Because parts of the spit can be flooded at higher water levels, many visitors pay attention to the tide before committing to the full length. Planning your time so you can return without wading deep sections ensures the walk remains a pleasure. Treated with care, the reef repays you with one of Samsø’s most elemental nature experiences: sea on both sides, wind in your face and a feeling of being far away, yet still firmly on Danish ground.
