Nestled in the South Funen Archipelago, Lyø is a picturesque island spanning 6 square kilometers, located approximately 7 kilometers southwest of Faaborg. Home to around 80 residents, this tranquil haven is renowned for its harmonious blend of historical charm and natural beauty.

At the heart of the island lies Lyø By, a village that stands as a testament to Denmark's rich architectural heritage. The village is characterized by narrow, winding alleys lined with beautifully preserved half-timbered houses, many dating back to the 18th century. Five village ponds dot the landscape, adding to the idyllic setting. Central to the village is the Lyø Church, constructed around 1600, notable for its distinctive round churchyard—a rarity in Denmark.

Lyø's history is both fascinating and tumultuous. In 1223, King Valdemar the Victorious and his son were captured on the island by Count Henry of Schwerin during a hunting expedition. This event had significant repercussions, leading to the fragmentation of Valdemar's Baltic Empire. Additionally, the island's population was decimated in the 16th century due to epidemics and pillaging. It was later repopulated by 24 families, each establishing farms around the village ponds, a layout that remains largely intact today.

Nature enthusiasts will find Lyø's diverse landscapes captivating. The island features two parallel valleys separated by a ridge, with the highest point reaching 24.6 meters. The coastline varies from rocky shores to sandy beaches, particularly on the eastern side, offering excellent spots for swimming and fishing. The area known as Revet, a cuspate foreland in the northwest, serves as an important breeding site for birds and is protected during the nesting season from March 1 to July 15.

A must-visit landmark is the Klokkestenen, an ancient dolmen dating back to 3500–3100 BC. Legend has it that striking the stone produces a bell-like sound, and if one makes a wish during this resonance, it will be granted.

Access to Lyø is facilitated by a ferry service from Faaborg, which also stops at Avernakø. The journey offers scenic views of the archipelago, setting the tone for the serene experience that awaits on the island. Upon arrival, visitors can explore the village, relax on the beaches, or embark on hikes and bike rides to discover the island's hidden gems.
