Discover more about DECAN Refuge

Located approximately 10 kilometers south of Djibouti City, along the RN2 highway, DECAN (Découvrir et Aider la Nature) Refuge is a beacon for wildlife conservation in the region. Founded in 2003 by a French veterinarian, this 30-hectare sanctuary provides a home for injured, orphaned, and rescued animals. DECAN's mission extends beyond animal care to actively combat poaching and preserve Djibouti's unique flora and fauna. The refuge is home to a diverse array of animals, including cheetahs, lions, antelopes, porcupines, and various bird species. Many of these animals were saved from poaching or were once kept illegally as caged pets. DECAN provides a nurturing environment where they can recover and, when possible, be released back into the wild. The refuge also collaborates with partners to reintroduce endemic species that had disappeared from the region due to hunting. DECAN also serves as an educational center, raising awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation. Guided tours and educational programs are offered to customs officers, police, and school children. One of the highlights is watching the big cats being fed, usually around 5 pm. Birdwatchers can also enjoy spotting flamingos, ibises, herons, and spoonbills. Visiting DECAN Refuge offers a chance to connect with nature, learn about wildlife conservation, and support a worthy cause. It's an unforgettable experience for nature lovers, families, and anyone seeking a tranquil retreat.
