Discover more about Fort Shirley

Fort Shirley, nestled within Dominica's Cabrits National Park, is a significant historical site that offers a captivating journey into the island's colonial past. Constructed by the British in 1765 and later expanded by the French, the fort served as a crucial defense post in the Lesser Antilles during the 18th and 19th centuries. Named for Sir Thomas Shirley, it stands as a testament to the strategic importance of Dominica in the conflicts between Britain and France. The fort's Georgian architecture, designed by Fraser and Bruce, is built within a volcanic crater, utilizing the natural defenses of the landscape. It once housed over 600 men and included gun batteries, cisterns, magazines, and barracks. Fort Shirley is also notable for the 1802 revolt of the 8th West India Regiment, where African slave soldiers mutinied, influencing the emancipation of slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. Abandoned in 1854, the fort remained under British Admiralty control until 1901. Since 1982, Dominican historian Dr. Lennox Honychurch has led restoration efforts, transforming parts of the fort into a multi-purpose venue for events and tourism. Visitors can explore the restored Officers' Quarters, Soldiers' Barracks, and ramparts, while enjoying panoramic views of Prince Rupert Bay. The site is part of Cabrits National Park, established in 1986 to protect the diverse ecosystems of the area.
