Getting There

    From the Roseau cruise port or city center, walk east towards the Dominica Botanical Gardens. Enter the gardens and locate Jack's Walk, a historic, moderately steep trail leading directly to Morne Bruce. The walk takes approximately 20-25 minutes. Note that Jack's Walk is quite steep in sections.

    Local minibuses operate in Roseau and can take you closer to Morne Bruce. Look for a bus heading towards Morne Bruce. Bus stops are located at designated points throughout the city. The bus will drop you off near Morne Bruce Road, from where you may need to walk the final section to the viewpoint. The fare is usually around EC$1.50 to EC$10.25 depending on the route.

    Taxis are readily available in Roseau, particularly at the cruise port and in the city center. Morne Bruce, also known as "The Morne," is a picturesque site east of Roseau offering a captivating bird's-eye view of the capital and the shimmering Caribbean Sea. Named after James Bruce, a captain of the Royal Engineers who designed several forts in Dominica during the 1700s, Morne Bruce holds historical significance as it was once home to a military garrison tasked with protecting Roseau.Established as a British military garrison in the 18th century, Morne Bruce was strategically important for defending Dominica against French invasions. Construction began in 1771, employing enslaved African laborers and skilled craftsmen. The garrison was part of a layered defensive network, using flag and cannon signals to relay warnings across the island. The garrison remained active from the late 1700s through 1854 and was closed in July 1854.Today, visitors can explore remnants of the original barracks and officers' quarters, and see some of the original cannons. The Morne Bruce Cross, erected in the 1920s, stands tall at the summit, serving as a symbol of protection over Roseau. Many visitors opt to drive to the summit, but a scenic route through the Botanical Gardens along Jack's Walk is favored by hikers.Morne Bruce is a harmonious blend of history, law enforcement, spirituality, and scenic beauty.
