Discover more about Papillote Wilderness Retreat

Papillote Wilderness Retreat, Dominica's original eco-inn, has been welcoming guests for over half a century. Founded in 1969 by Anne Jno Baptiste, Papillote is located on the verdant slopes of Morne Macaque, in the heart of the Roseau Valley, near the village of Trafalgar. The retreat is known for its commitment to sustainable tourism, blending seamlessly with the surrounding rainforest. Papillote's four acres encompass meticulously cultivated botanical gardens showcasing over 1,000 plant species. Visitors can explore collections of aroids, begonias, bromeliads, gingers, heliconias, and indigenous orchids. Walking paths crisscross cold and hot mineral streams, leading to themed glades. Two waterfalls cascade down the mountainside within the garden's boundaries, creating cold water streams that flow to the Roseau River. Guests can relax in the naturally heated volcanic hot pools, surrounded by lush vegetation. The retreat offers guided nature walks, bird-watching excursions and access to nearby attractions such as the Trafalgar Falls. The retreat's restaurant serves traditional Creole cuisine using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Papillote offers a range of accommodations, from cozy cottages to luxurious suites, all designed to connect visitors with nature. The eco-conscious operations include solar power, rainwater harvesting, and support for local communities. Though impacted by Hurricane Maria in 2017, the gardens have been restored, and the retreat rebuilt.
