Fort Shirley, nestled within Dominica's Cabrits National Park, is a meticulously restored 18th-century British garrison offering visitors an immersive journey into the island's colonial past. Construction began in 1765 by the British and was later expanded by the French during their occupation from 1778 to 1784. The fort is named after Sir Thomas Shirley, Governor of the Leeward Islands at the time.Strategically located on a peninsula north of Portsmouth, within a volcanic crater, Fort Shirley overlooks Prince Rupert's Bay and Douglas Bay, offering panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea. The fort played a crucial role in the defense of Dominica and the Lesser Antilles during conflicts between Britain and France. It once housed up to 600 soldiers and comprised over 50 buildings, including gun batteries, cisterns, magazines, storehouses, and barracks.Fort Shirley is also known for the 1802 revolt of the 8th West India Regiment, where African slave soldiers mutinied against poor conditions, influencing the emancipation of slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. Abandoned in 1854, restoration efforts began in 1982, transforming the site into a multi-purpose venue for tourism, events, and historical exploration. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins, climb the walls, and imagine life in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Officer's Quarters has been renovated and now hosts weddings, receptions, and concerts.
