Cabrits National Park, established in 1986, is situated on the northern tip of Dominica, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. The park spans 1,313 acres (5.30 sq km) and includes both land and sea, protecting a diverse range of ecosystems.The park's landscape is dominated by two volcanic hills, East Cabrit (140 m) and West Cabrit (171 m), remnants of an ancient volcanic crater. These hills provide stunning panoramic views of the surrounding coastline, including Douglas Bay and Prince Rupert Bay. The name "Cabrits" is derived from the French word for "goat," a reference to the animals that once roamed the area.At the heart of the park lies Fort Shirley, a massive 18th-century British garrison. Construction began in 1765, and the fort was expanded during the French occupation from 1778 to 1784. The fort housed over 600 men and played a key role in defending Dominica against invasions. Fort Shirley is also notable as the site of the 1802 revolt by slave soldiers of the 8th West India Regiment, which contributed to the emancipation of slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. The fort was abandoned in 1854 and underwent restoration starting in 1982.Cabrits National Park also protects a variety of natural habitats, including tropical forests, coral reefs, and wetlands. The park's coastal fringe is home to coconuts, sea grapes, and almond trees. The coral reefs offer excellent opportunities for snorkeling and diving, with diverse marine life. Hiking trails wind through the park, offering stunning views and the chance to observe local wildlife, including land crabs, lizards, iguanas, and various bird species.
