Discover more about Papillote Wilderness Retreat

Papillote Wilderness Retreat, Dominica's original eco-inn, has been welcoming guests for over half a century. Founded in 1969 by Anne Jno Baptiste, this family-run retreat is nestled on the verdant slopes of Morne Macaque, in the heart of the Roseau Valley near the village of Trafalgar. The retreat is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere, seamlessly blending with the surrounding rainforest. Papillote's four acres of meticulously cultivated botanical gardens showcase over 1,000 plant species, including collections of aroids, begonias, bromeliads, gingers, heliconias, and indigenous orchids. Walking paths crisscross cold and hot mineral streams, leading to themed glades where sunlight filters through the canopy. Two waterfalls cascade down the mountainside within the garden's boundaries, creating cold water streams that flow to the Roseau River. A series of volcanic hot pools punctuate the landscape, inviting guests to relax in the mineral-laden waters. Beyond the gardens, Papillote's location provides easy access to some of Dominica's most iconic natural attractions. The towering twin Trafalgar Falls are a short walk away, offering a breathtaking display of cascading water. Other nearby attractions include the legendary Boiling Lake, Titou Gorge, and Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Papillote offers a range of accommodations, from cozy cottages to luxurious suites, each designed to offer comfort while allowing visitors to connect with nature. The on-site restaurant serves delicious, traditional Creole cuisine, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The retreat is committed to sustainability, with eco-conscious operations that include solar power, rainwater harvesting, and support for local communities. Despite challenges, including damage from Hurricane Maria in 2017, Papillote has been rebuilt and refreshed, continuing to offer an exceptional experience.
