    The Roseau Cathedral Chapel, formally known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Fair Haven, stands as a captivating landmark in the heart of Roseau, Dominica. Its story began in 1730 when Father Guillaume Martel established a small wooden church for French settlers. This humble building, constructed in the style of Kalinago dwellings, marked the beginning of Catholicism on the island.Over the centuries, the church has undergone several transformations. Construction on a more permanent structure began in the late 18th century, with the central section completed in 1839. Side aisles were added to accommodate a growing congregation after the abolition of slavery. In the mid-19th century, Bishop Michael Monaghan enhanced the church with a central stone tower and spire. He also imported a marble altar with brass statuettes. The facade was completed in 1916, showcasing a Gothic Romanesque Revival style.The cathedral is made of volcanic stone, which has allowed it to withstand earthquakes and hurricanes. The windows are Gothic in style, with wooden shutters for ventilation. Today, the Roseau Cathedral Chapel remains an active center of worship and a testament to the enduring spirit of the Dominican people. It is an example of European creolisation influence in Dominica, integrating European architectural elements with Caribbean building practices.
