Discover more about Fort Shirley

Fort Shirley, nestled within Dominica's Cabrits National Park, stands as a testament to the island's rich and often turbulent history. Constructed by the British in 1765, the fort was a key defensive structure designed to protect the northern coast of Dominica. It was named for Sir Thomas Shirley, Governor of the Leeward Islands at the time. The French extended the fort during their occupation of Dominica from 1778 to 1784. Built of brick and stone in the Georgian architectural style, Fort Shirley comprised more than 50 buildings, including seven gun batteries, cisterns, powder magazines, and ordnance storehouses, as well as barracks that could house over 600 men. The fort is also notable for the 1802 revolt of slave soldiers from the 8th West India Regiment, which contributed to the emancipation of slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. The fort was abandoned in 1854 but underwent restoration starting in 1982 under Dr. Lennox Honychurch. Today, much of the fort is intact or has been rebuilt, allowing visitors to experience what the area looked like when the fort was operational. Climb the walls, look out from a row of cannons, and imagine setting your sights on ships slowly drifting into range. The Officer's Quarters has been renovated and is now used for events. Fort Shirley is Dominica's most important historical site and was the scene of the revolt of the 8th West India Regiment in 1802 when African slave soldiers took over the garrison for three days. Their action resulted in all slave soldiers in the British Empire being freed in 1807.
