Cuicocha: A Hidden Gem of Ecuador

Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car, start your journey from the city of Otavalo, which is approximately 22 kilometers away from Cuicocha. Head south on the Pan-American Highway (E35) and drive for about 15 kilometers. Then, take the exit toward Cotacachi (E28) and continue for another 7 kilometers. Look for signs indicating Cuicocha, which will lead you to the lake entrance. There is a parking area available at the entrance, and a small fee (around $2) may be charged for parking.

• Public Transportation (Bus)

  To reach Cuicocha by public transportation, head to the Otavalo bus terminal. Take a bus heading to Cotacachi, which should cost around $0.50. The bus ride will take approximately 30 minutes. Once you arrive in Cotacachi, look for a local bus or taxi that goes to Cuicocha. The local bus may cost an additional $1 to $1.50 and take about 15-20 minutes to reach the lake entrance. If you opt for a taxi, the fare is usually around $5-$7.

• Walking/Hiking

  If you're feeling adventurous and are already in the vicinity, consider hiking to Cuicocha from Cotacachi. The hike is approximately 7 kilometers and can take around 1.5 to 2 hours. Follow the signs from Cotacachi toward Cuicocha, enjoying the beautiful scenery along the way. Make sure to carry enough water and wear proper hiking shoes.
