    Discover more about Catequilla

Catequilla, also known as Kati-Killa, is an archaeological site nestled in the Pomasqui Valley, near Quito, Ecuador. Perched at 2,638 meters (8,655 ft) on a mountaintop, this site, attributed to the pre-Columbian Quitu-Cara culture, is believed to have been an astronomical observatory. What sets Catequilla apart is its precise location on the Earth's Equator, the only pre-Hispanic site in the Americas with this distinction.Constructed around 800 AD, Catequilla, meaning "follower of the moon" in Quechua, features a semicircular wall stretching 107 meters in length. Within the site, a lithic disk, a circular stone platform, hints at the advanced astronomical knowledge of its builders, possibly used to track the June solstice. Archaeological excavations have unearthed ceramics from Incan and colonial times, adding layers to its rich history. While less visited than the nearby Mitad del Mundo monument, Catequilla offers a more authentic and serene experience. Its elevated position provides stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding Andean landscape, including several Andean peaks and the ruins of Pucará de Rumicucho. For those seeking a deeper connection to Ecuador's pre-Inca past and a quiet moment at the center of the world, Catequilla is a compelling destination.Despite its historical significance, Catequilla remains relatively undeveloped, offering a raw and intimate encounter with Ecuador's ancient heritage.
