    Discover more about Catequilla

Catequilla, also known as Kati-Killa, is an archaeological site in the Pomasqui Valley of Ecuador, located in the San Antonio parish of Quito. Rising 300 meters above the surrounding valley, this mountaintop site reaches an elevation of 2,638 meters. Constructed around 800 AD by the pre-Inca Quitu-Cara culture, Catequilla is believed to have been an astronomical observatory. The name Catequilla translates from Quechua as 'follower of the moon,' hinting at its celestial purpose. The site features a semi-circular wall, 107 meters in length and 68 meters in diameter. A lithic disk, a circular stone platform with three lines of stones, sits in the northwest. These structures were likely used to observe the sun, moon, and stars, with the site's alignment corresponding to the June solstice. Catequilla, along with the stone circles of Jarata and Pacpo, form a straight line that aligns with the shadows of the mountains during the solstice.Unlike the more famous Mitad del Mundo monument, Catequilla is located precisely on the equator, a fact confirmed by modern GPS technology. While the monument attracts large crowds, Catequilla offers a quieter, more authentic experience, connecting visitors to Ecuador's rich indigenous heritage. Archaeological excavations have unearthed ceramics from Incan and colonial times, revealing the site's continued importance throughout history.
