Getting There

Public Transport

From Quito, take a bus from Terminal Terrestre Quitumbe south towards Latacunga or Ambato. Ask the driver to drop you off at the El Chasqui entrance to Cotopaxi National Park (A la Ingressa del Parque Nacional Cotopaxi). The bus ride takes approximately 1.5 hours and costs around $2. From the entrance, hire a taxi or arrange for a local guide with a 4x4 to explore the park. A taxi to the park entrance and attractions within can cost $8-$15. Alternatively, from Guayaquil, take a bus to Latacunga (approx. $10-$12) and then another bus to Cotopaxi National Park ($3-$4).
Car

From Quito, take the Pan-American Highway (E35) south towards Latacunga. The main southern entrance (El Chasqui) is well-signposted. The drive takes about 1.5 hours. From the highway, it's about 15-20 km on unpaved roads to the park's control point. Alternatively, take the Pan-American Highway to Machachi and then to Güitig. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended, especially for reaching the Refugio, but a sedan can usually manage the southern entrance route if driven carefully. Parking is available at the Refugio trailhead.
