Discover more about Independence Square

Independence Square, or Plaza de la Independencia, is the central and principal public square of Quito, Ecuador. Colloquially known as Plaza Grande, it serves as a symbol of the nation's executive power and a focal point in the city's historical center. The square's history dates back to the founding of Quito by the Spanish conquistadors and was initially an open area with a water source. Over time, significant buildings were constructed around it, including the Carondelet Palace (Presidential Palace), the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace, and the Municipal Palace. In 1906, the square was officially named Independence Square, commemorating the first cry of independence from the Spanish monarchy on August 10, 1809. A French-sculpted monument was erected to honor the heroes of independence, replacing a former fountain. Today, Independence Square is a vibrant space with tree-lined paths, gardens, and a bustling atmosphere. Visitors can admire the colonial architecture, people-watch, and explore nearby restaurants, cafes, and craft stores. The square is a popular meeting place and a site for various events, celebrations, and even protests.
