Discover more about Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa

The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, meaning "Mound of Shards," are located in the Carmous district of Alexandria. The name originates from the terracotta fragments found at the entrance, remnants of offerings left by mourners. Discovered in 1900 when a donkey accidentally fell into a hidden shaft, these catacombs are considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. Built during the Roman era, the catacombs served as a burial site for wealthy Alexandrian families, reflecting the city's cosmopolitan nature. The intricate complex spans three levels, descending approximately 35 meters (115 feet) underground, though only the upper two are accessible due to water infiltration. Visitors enter via a spiral staircase that surrounds a central shaft. The catacombs feature several notable chambers, including the Main Rotunda, a circular room with arched niches. The Hall of Caracalla, named after the Roman Emperor Caracalla, served as a communal burial chamber. The Hall of Tokens was a place where visitors left offerings. The tombs combine Egyptian, Greek, and Roman elements, such as Egyptian deities in Roman attire and Greek motifs.
