El Attarine Mosque, also known as the Al-Juyushi Mosque, is a significant historical landmark in Alexandria, Egypt. Situated in the heart of the Al Attarine district, the mosque stands as a testament to the city's rich and diverse history. The name 'Attarine' refers to the spice dealers who historically populated this area, adding to the location's cultural significance.Originally, the site was home to a church consecrated in 370 AD by Saint Athanasius. In the 7th century, following the Islamic conquest of Alexandria, the church was converted into a mosque. The mosque has undergone numerous renovations throughout its history, with significant restoration efforts in 1057 AD by Badr El Gamaly. The current structure largely dates back to the early 20th century, showcasing a blend of architectural styles, including Ottoman and Mamluk influences.The mosque features a rectangular design with a triangular appearance from the outside, with a minaret in the southeastern corner. The minaret, considered one of the most beautiful in Egypt, consists of four levels: a square base, an octagonal second level, a circular third level where the Imam calls for prayer, and a small circular dome with intricate decorations. Inside, the mosque has two floors, with the ground floor for men's prayers and the second floor for women.
